Chapter 8: Power Supplies
Understanding Electricity
Volts
The amount of Pressure in a Wire
Current(Or Amperage)
The amount of electrons moving past a certain point in a wire.
Wattage
The amount of amps and volts needed so that a particular device will function.
Resistance
Resistance is measured in Ohms.
Powering the PC
Power Supply connects to an IEC-320 Wire
Power Supplies can be dual voltage as well
Use a multi meter to test the power
Surge Suppressor
Device that absorbs extra voltage to protect the PC
Joule
How much energy a PC can handle is measured by this.
PSU Stands for Power Supply Unit
Takes electricity from wall sockets and transforms it into electricity to power the motherboard.
Other Important Terms
UPS
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Protects your computer when a power outage occurs.
Mini Connectors
support 5 volts to 12 volts.
Alternating Current is when electrons flow in a direction back and forth.
Direct Current is when electrons flow in one direction in a continuous circuit.
