Why Schools Should Start Later in the Morning...
Sleep Deprivation
Students that get enough sleep perform better physically and mentally.
Sleep deprivation causes hunger, thirst, depression and weakens memory and cognitive thinking.
Many teenagers brains don't call for sleep till 11 pm or after, while schools often start before 7:30 or 8 pm and teenagers need more sleep than that time allows for.
Success of Other Schools
Many European countries and other countries around the world start school later universally and studies show, in those countries, more students go to university and end up with better grades.
Nauset High School in Massachusetts moved back their start time to 8:35. Tardiness went down by 35 percent, and D's and F's dropped by half.
It's been seen that high schools with later start times (after 8 am) have a higher graduation rate than those with early start times.
Benefits of a later start time.
Students will be more refreshed in the mornings, and could lead to better grades.
Could lead to less students being depressed, which is a something that can be brought upon by sleep deprivation.
Students can be healthier mentally and physically.
More safe.
Schools with later start times tend to have students getting into less car crashes, and increased psychomotor performance.
High school athletes with less sleep tend to get injured more often because of their reaction time being slowed because from lack of sleep.
Less students with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts because of them being better mentally due to the extra rest.
