HOW CAN WE MAKE THE COMMUNITY MORE BEAUTIFUL?
Enhance the environment with plants
SCIENCE CONNECTION: Topic E: Plant growth and changes
What is a plant?
Plant parts: roots, stem, seeds, flower, leaves.
Plant lifecycle and Photosynthesis.
How are seeds distributed? For example: wind, animals etc.
Why do we need them and how do they affect humans and other species?
Read book "Miss Rumphius" by Barbara Connelly: Students explore ideas around how they can make the world more beautiful: Brainstorm and record ideas in groups
Make connection to story about another class that helped save a butterfly by growing plants
Each group will chose a plant that affects a species: students will research and write about which plant students want to plant in the classroom and the reason why it will help the environment and the impact it will have
Students can present the information in whichever manner they desire:Play, Song, Powerpoint, Diagram, Poem.

Students design the a plant and design a model
Students will make a 3D model with pipe cleaners of their plant
Use model as a reference and then students will plant their seeds in pot
Track data in a table and measure growth of plant
Record and monitor the stages of the plant as it grows
Students will journal about their observations while plant grows
Draw the stages of the plant
: In spring give back to the community by planting the plants at school, in community or at home to help save species.
Component 10 (ii) - SUBJECT MATTER: Plant and animals
Students use life size measurement in their planning with reference to a ruler and calculate area needed for the plant
