Airway diseases
Silicosis
-
-
Types
-
-
Chronic simple silicosis
Small around opacities (<10mm in diameter) in both lungs
May occasionally display mild restrictive defect even though pulmonary functioning test looks normal
-
-
Prevention is KEY
Those who develop PMF (progressive massive fibrosis) will still have high mortality rate.
Prognosis for chronic exposure is good
-
Asbestosis
Caused by asbestos
Types:
-
Needlelike (amphibiole):
- amosite
- crocidolite
- tremolite
- actinolite
- anthophyllite
-
Long, thin fibers of silicon
Mined for its insulating properties
Latency period: about 20 years
-
-
-
Beryllium
-
Phagocytosed by macrophages that present beryllium antigen to lymphocytes --> beryllium-specific CD4+ T cells and release cytokines --> form granuloma
-
-
Obstructive
ASTHMA: reversible
-
-
Symptoms:
Recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, SOB, coughing
Narrowed airway (limited airflow)
Tightened muscles constrict airway
Inflamed/thickened airway wall
