Approaches In Psychology
Branch Of Philosophy
-
John Locke
-
Empiricism - All of our knowledge is based on our experiences we receive through our senses - believed we do not inherit instincts or knowledge
Wilhelm Wundt
-
Introspection - Systematic study of the mind by breaking up consciousness into thoughts, images and sensations
Became well known for his scientific method and the way he carried out his experiments. By controlling variables.
Problems with Introspection - It is unreliable as it measures things that are not observable, each persons choosing to describe there thought and feelings differently. It is Not Accurate as they cannot be consciously aware of there internal mental processes
Behaviourist Approach
-
Classical Conditioning

-
Strengths - It has real life applications in the form of therapies such as Systematic Desensitisation and Aversion Therapies. It also follows the scientific method and has been repeated many times.
-
Weaknesses - It suggests that we have no free will as we cannot decide what we learn and what we don't. It disregards all biological causes of why we learn. It also ignores internal mental processes on behaviour.
