Unit 3

Brain's Lobes

Frontal Lobe: involved in speaking and muscle movements and in making plans and judgements

Parietal Lobe: receives sensory input for touch and body position

Temporal Lobe: auditory areas receiving info mostly from the ears

Occipital Lobe: includes areas receiving visual information

Systems:

Nervous System

Neuron: building block of the nervous system

Axon: Sends out information in the form of neurotransmitters

Dendrite: Receives information from other neurons and will send its own info with an action potential

Soma/Cell Body: Center of neuron with branching off dendrites and axons

Myelin Sheath: Covers axon to increase speed of the message being communicated

Central: Brain and Spinal Cord

Peripheral: Gathers and transmits information from the CNS to the body

Autonomic: controls self-regulated action f internal organs or glands

Somatic: controls voluntary movements of skeletal muscles

Sympathetic: Increases heart rate and blood pressure

Parasympathetic: decreases heart rate and blood pressure

Brain

Brainstem: oldest part and core of the brain

Medulla: regulates breathing and heartbeat

Thalamus: sensory control center;directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex

Reticular Formation: nerve network in the brainstem that mainly controls arousal

Limbic System: neural system located beneath the cerebral hemispheres

Amygdala: controls emotion; mainly fear and anger

Hypothalamus: controls urges; hunger, sexual, etc.

Hippocampus: maintains and produces conscious memories
