The UK and the Wider World
The UK's Global Links.
Historically, the UK had many global links due to controlling a large empire which spanned across almost every continent.
Even though the British Empire no longer exists, the UK still has many links across the world.
These links are cultural links, economic links and links through transport and communication.
Cultural Links.
Most of the Cultural Links of the UK are a result of the British Empire.
Food, Music and Films are imported from countries which were once in the British Empire, such as India and the United States.
More recent Cultural Links exist because of trade between the UK and other countries, such as imported fashion from Italy or France.
As a result of items from many different cultures, the UK is a multicultural society.
Trade Links.
Trade Links are created by international trade between countries.
Most of the UK's trade is with countries in the EU and the US.
The countries the UK imports the most from are the USA, Germany, China and the Netherlands.
Some of these countries, such as the USA and the Netherlands are historic trading partners, while China and Germany are traded with due to more recent growths.
Transport and Communication Links.
London Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world due to the amount of air traffic with it as a starting point or destination.
The UK has historically had a powerful Merchant Navy, and still has powerful naval trade today.
Many Fiber Optic communications are directed to the UK or move through cables in the UK to reach their destination.
In 2016, a project creating a communications cable going from London to Tokyo was completed, allowing more communication between the UK and East Asia.
