the role of fungi in nature is, fungi affects humans and other organisms in many ways. many fungi provide food for people many fungi are decomposers like bacteria. in 1928 a Scottish biologist named Alexander Fleming was examining Petri dishes in which he was growing bacteria he noticed a spot of green mold growing in one dish that fungi mold produced a substance that killed bacteria.

the bacterial cell
the billions of bacteria were not discovered until the late 1600s.someone by the name of Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered it by accident. he made microscopes and saw a worm-like organism but the microscope wasn't good enough to see details.

cell sizes and shapes
the largest known bacterium is about the size of a period at the end of a sentence. an average bacterium is much smaller. about 0.5 to 1 micrometre in diameter. a micrometre is 1 millionth of a meter. bacterial cells have 1 of three basic shapes spherical, rodlike, or spiral.

how viruses multiply
after a virus attaches to a host cell, it enters the cell. once inside the cell a virus's genetic material takes over many of the cell's functions. it instructs the cell to produce the virus's proteins and genetic material. these proteins and genetic materials then assemble into new viruses.some virus's are very active and quickly begin to produce the virus's proteins and genetic materials.but some virus's aren't active.

fungus-like protists
slime molds are often brilliantly coloured. they live on forest floors and other moist shady places. just like water molds and downy mildews.
