:silhouettes: Guided reading helps the teacher to address student's reading needs (if any) and work within their zone of proximal development. Teachers also scaffolds students funds of knowledge about reading.
:silhouette: It is crucial to realize that independent reading is very important itself because students can gain confidence while reading texts appropriate for their level and practice reading skills and strategies. Additionally, students gain self-esteem and independence as an individual since they can pick their own reading materials (as stated previously).
:unlock: This is an interactive reading experience where the teacher is responsible for modelling the necessary skills for a proficient reader and supports struggling readers with the use of predictable text to better their ability to create meaning.
:red_flag: Texts that have meaningful messages, discussion time for questions and responses, and time for reflection on past experiences helps encourage critical thinking and to develop skills (like cues, self-correction, and to make meaning) while reading
:unlock: Shared reading encourages active participation, active listening, discovery of new reading strategies, and to develop a strong understanding of phonics. This also encourages kids to read with the teacher, which can encourage a feeling of community and confidence with reading.
:silhouettes: Working in smaller groups encourages students to engage in discussions and questioning by reinforcing their skills and strategies for reading. Through this, students build independence in reading as they learn self-correction and making meaning.
:silhouette: Students can pick their own texts to read in different modes, that are appropriate to their level, instead of relying on the teacher or their parents to select for them.
