district 12 cares for people that are not very known
'Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of district 12 as a place that cares about me. But a shift has occurred since I stepped up to take Prim's place, and now it seems I have come someone precious.' P. 24
This tells us that when someone does something good or nice as big as volunteering for the hunger games even in a small district, you get respect from other people that might not know you well.
North America
the book takes place in America so it can show that America has changed
'In school, they tell us the Capitol was built in a place once called the Rockies'

The Arena
it is hard to find water in the arena
I can go a long time. I know that from my days in the woods. But I will need water. That was Haymitch's second instruction, and since I sort of botched the first, I keep a sharp eye out for any sign of it. No luck P. 151
this shows us that the arena is somewhere where they made a water source hard to find of not possible to find to challenge the tributes so the game can go on for longer

this shows she stumbled across a stream this time and that is is like a normal stream wide but shallow
there are multiple tree forks in the Arena
' We pick a fork high in a tree and settle in for the night just as the anthem begins to play.' P.205
this shows that there are many trees and they are in tight areas
the Arena has many things you can spot if you were told that they were there somewhere
' I don't see any other tributes, but I do notice some of the things Rue has mentioned. Patches of the sweet berries. A bush with the leaves that healed my stings. clusters of tracker jacker nests in the vicinity of the tree I was trapped in.' P. 214
this shows that one prim was right about the stuff being there and the arena is filled with things that can help and hurt someone or thing
the stream is a path way for Katniss
' Then I travel uphill using the stream as a guide. At one point, I find boot prints in the mud along the bank' P. 228

not happy with misbehavior and uncalled for
' As I stride towards the, I fling my bow to one side and my quiver to the other. I brush past the gaping Avoxes who guard the elevators and hit the number twelve button with my fist.' P. 103
this shows the Avoxes are not used to people disrespecting the game makers in the Capitol
the Capitol is somewhere that is bright and shining and sweet
' Then I just lie curled up on the bed, stroking the silken sheets, watching the sun set over the artificial candy Capitol' P. 104
this show us that the capitol seems almost fake or unreal to someone that is used to a place like district 12
The Capitol can create things that are unnatural and doesn't belong
' More likely they will be one of the Capitol mutations, tracker jackers.' P. 185
this shows that they have the technology to create mutant animals and animals that are different like using GMO's or hormones to grow the animals big
The Capitol made new weapons during the war and left them or still use then
' Like the jabberjays, these killer wasps were spawned in a lab and strategically placed, like land mines, around the districts during the war. P. 185

Home
bread is hard to get and is not a common food at Katniss' house.
'When I dropped them on the table, Prim's hands reached to tear off a chunk, but I made her sit, forced my mother to join us at the table and poured warm tea. I scraped off the black stuff and sliced the bread.' P. 31
this shows that people in district 12 or Prim don't have enough food and that bread is something they don't get often
The Woods, Valleys, and Lake outside District 12
There is a shortage of food and water in District 12
“Most of the Peacekeepers turn a blind eye to those of us who hunt because they’re as hungry for fresh meat as anybody is.” p.5
-The Capitol normally forbids people to hunt for food.
This shows us that Katniss and Gale hunt for food to supplement the
meager allowances from the Capitol.
-The area around District 12 is dangerous.
“In the fall, a few brave souls sneak into the woods to harvest apples. But always in sight of the Meadow. Always close enough to run back to the safety of District 12 if trouble arises. “District 12. Where you can starve to death in safety,” I mutter. p.6
People must take risks to find any kind of food.
-The area around District 12 is dangerous.
The woods helped Katniss survive in district 12
'The woods became our savior, and each day I went a bit farther into its arms.' P. 51

the bakery
the bakery is a very popular place that trades with people
' "Mm, still warm, " I say. He must have been at the bakery at the crack of dawn to trade for it. "what did it cost you?"

the training center is a space that is full of many things and is large
'The training Center has a tower designed exclusively for the tributes and their teams. This will be our home until the actual Games begin. Each district has an entire floor.' P. 73
this shows us that they are given a big space before the big Games and that they have space
the training center is some where where you can learn and refresh skills
' So the next three days pass with Peeta and me going quietly from station ti station. We do pick up some valuable skills, from starting fires, to knife throwing, to making shelter. Despite Haymitch's order to appear mediocre, Peeta excels in hand-to-hand combat, and I sweep the edible plant test without blinking an eye.' P 96
this shows us that at the training center you can learn several skills and you can practice things that you allready know
The training center has a lot of equipment and has multiples of items
' Back in the center of the gymnasium, I take my initial position and skewer the dummy right through the heart. Then I sever the rope that holds the sandbag for boxing, and the bag splits open as it slams to the ground.' P. 101

The quarters that they are staying at are a nice place and something that Katniss is not used to

This can show us that there is technology to keep someone from jumping off something also it shows that there is a place that the tributes could relax and get fresh air
Garden
At the garden you can talk with out being heard
' From the branches hang hundreds of wind chimes, which account for the tinkling I heard. Here in the garden, on this windy night, it's enough to drown out two people who are trying not to be heard.' P. 81
this shows us that there is noise that the garden makes and it is a good place for people to talk and not be heard by others
Panem
Each district has there own culture, food, and recourse's
' One day, Peeta empties our breadbasket and points out how they have been careful to include types from the districts along with the refined bread from the Capitol. The fish-shaped loaf tinted green with seaweed from district 4. The crescent moon roll dotted with seeds from district 11. ' P. 97-98
this shows us that the districts are like countries and have different ways of doing and/or making things like bread
Panem is known to go out of power at certain times
' At homes and community halls around the country, every television set is turned on. Every citizen of Panem is tuned in. There will be no blackouts tonight.' P. 124
this shows us that blackouts can happen often if there are a bunch of people who are trying to watch the same thing
Every one in Panem watch the games
' But I can't let my fear show. Absolutely, positively, I am live on every screen in Panem' P.223

this show us how the districts despise of the games and how they wish they did not happen
Cornucopia
this is where tributes could feel safe if they stayed there
' Sixty seconds to take in the ring of tributes all equidistant from the Cornucopia, a giant golden horn shaped like a cone with a curved tail, the mouth of which is at least twenty feet high, spilling over with things that will give us life here in the arena. P. 148
this shows us that they have a chance to get materials and items that they want or need to live
the things are scattered with more useful things towards the center
' Strewn around the Cornucopia are other supplies, their value decreasing the farther they are from the horn. For instance, only a few steps from my feet lies a three-foot square of plastic.' P. 148
this shows us that there are better things in the middle but more risk, but there are still things further away but not as good and less risky
the Cornucopia has had all the items taken from it and moved
' The Cornucopia sits in its original position, but its insides have been picked clean.' P. 215
this shows that the career tributes have takein all of the items and moved them somewhere else
