The Healthy Mind

Stress

resistance

when you had a close call when driving a call, that feeling

still encounter ongoing stress, forces us to adapt, cope with it.

not as dramatic as alarm, but still inpactful

exhausted

stressors are continuing for long times

strength and energy levels drop

leads to depression, death, etc

regardless of what type of stressor, once you identify that theres a stressor, you initiate Selye's GAS system

Amgdala

identifying a stressor goes from the thalamus to the amygdala, where the are processed more thoroughly

once it identifies a stressor, it goes through a "fear circuit"

damaged amygdala's results in the improper accessing of a danger level on a stressor

once the amygdala has finished identifying, it sends it to the hypothalamus, where it is then coordinated with the Autonomic System where its then sent to the sympathetic division.

The Sympathetic adrenal medullary (SAM)

initiates the release of adrenaline (epinephrine) and norepinephrine into the bloodstream from the adrenals. which initiates the flight or fight responses from other organs

Hypothalamic- pituitary adrenal axis (HPA)

initiates the release of cortisol into bloodstream

hypothalamus tells pituitary to tell adrenals to release cortisol

cortisol increases the energy available in the bloodstream

woman are more likely to do tend and befriend

alternate to fight and flight, they instead resort to soothing, connections, and protection.

releases more oxytocin, which helps social bonding

lower socioeconomic status is highly correlated with more stress bc they have less food, more health issues, less exercise, and more stressors

stress can be good for the immune system

our body prioritizes body functions and the emergency becomes the priority

chronic stress is more hurtful than a few short-bursts of stress

when we are under stress, the producing of lymphocytes is suppressed, and that will be harmful over time

Type b personality
