An imposing physical specimen for his day. George 'Rube' Waddell possessed the intellectual and emotional maturity of a child.
Rube began playing baseball in the 1890s. He made his major league debut on September 8, 1897. After several years of playing for various clubs. in 1902 legendary manager Connie Mack brought Rube to the Philadelphia Athletics, using Pinkerton escorts to make sure Rube showed up.
During the five years Rube pitched for the Athletics he won a 20 inning contest against Boston's Cy Young on July 4, 1905. Rube's passions were fastballs. fishing. fire fighting. females. and firewater. not necessarily in that order. as long as it added up to fun. At spring training he might disappear for days. only to be found leading a parade down the main street of Jacksonville Florida. or wrestling an alligator in a nearby lagoon.
On the field Rube might pitch a double header in exchange for having the next day off in order to go fishing. All while setting baseball records and increasing attendance as fans showed up just to see what Rube might do next.
Rube pitched his last Major League game on August 1. 1910. for the St. Louis Browns of the American League. He pitched his final game with Virginia. Minnesota. of the Northern League on July 20, 1913.
