Acute infection - short period, cleared by immune system quick
Persistent infection - longer duration, eventually cleared by immune system
Latent infection - remains in cells for life, often dormant and can be reactivated later, but usually asymptomatic

1) Tisuue damage - cell shut downs normal function due to over-replication of virus, leads to lysis
