Where do People Migrate Within a Country?
Interregional Migration in the United States
Changing Center of Population
The population center is the average location of everyone in the country
1790: Hugging the Coast
Basically all settlements were here during this time
Many never wanted to leave due to the shipping and income Europe brought for them, also the Appalachian mountains blocked much movement west and finally "Indians" covered most of the land west
1800-1840: Crossing the Appalachians
Transportation improved during this time mostly by the building of canals to the great lakes and New York City
There was a lot of open land to be taken at a small price so many jumped on this deal and made houses between the Mississippi and Appalachians
1850-1890: Rushing to the Gold
Center of Population moved west during this time, pioneers went all the way to California
They went to California for the gold rush, many passed the great plains up because of the dry weather, lack of trees and tough grassland
1900-1940: Filling In the Great Plains
The movement westward slowed during this time because the amount of people leaving the east and the amount of people immigrating to America was about the same
Many people during this time took up areas in the great plains mostly because agriculture advances had made the area impossible to farm now very possible
Finally the expansion of railroads made people come to the midwest because the government gave land to the railroad companies which then made money by selling it to farmers
1950-2010: Moving South
The move west was amped up during this time, but also moved to the south for job options and a warmer climate
People from the East and Midwest thought the south was stealing their industries, but the south got most of its income from new companies
Interregional Migration in Other Large Countries
Interregional Migration in Canada
Primarily had migration from east to west, since 2001 Alberta and British Columbia have had the most net migration in and Ontario has had the biggest net migration out
The three largest interprovincial flows are from, Ontario to Alberta, Ontario to British Columbia, and Alberta to British Columbia
Interregional Migration in Russia
Highly clustered population in the western/ European side of Russia, interregional migration has been encouraged since the Asian side of Russia is largely uninhabited
During the reign of the Soviet Union they made factories and would sometimes force people to move to these factories in remote areas in Asia
Interregional Migration in China
In developing countries the main flow of people is from rural to urban because more jobs are available usually, over 150 million Chinese people have moved from rural areas to the urban areas on the east coast in search of jobs
Restrictions used to be heavy on the Chinese to not make interregional moves but these restrictions have been lifted recently
Interregional Migration in Brazil
Most people are clustered near the east coast in big cities, the tropical interior is sparsely populated, to attract more people to the interior they moved their capital to a interior city called Brasilia
Them moving their capital has caused net migration into the interior and net migration out in the exterior, mostly east coast
Intraregional Migration
Migration from Rural to Urban Areas
This began in the 1800's in Europe and North America because of the industrial revolution, in 1800 5% of people lived in urban areas, in 1920 50% and in 2015 81%
Urbanization has spread to Asia, Latin America and Africa, in Latin America from 1950-2015 40% to 80% of people urbanized, in Asia 15% to 47% and in Africa 10% to 38%, all due to better economic opportunities
Migration from Urban to Suburban Areas
Most intraregional moves in developed countries happen to suburbs, many make this move to live apart from the big city and to live in a detached home, private yard and their own garage or driveway
To accommodate for the suburban growth many farms on the outskirts of these towns turn in to housing, developments, new roads and many other services are built
Migration from Urban to Rural Areas
Net migration from urban rural areas is called counterurbanization , this happens with a influx of people into the suburbs
Many are lured to rural areas to get away from the fast paced lifestyles and slow their lives down on a farm, and earn money from their own agriculture
Because of the advances in communication and transportation no place in a developed country is really isolated, intraregional migration has slowed since the 1980's
Most intraregional moves happen from city to suburb but it's not as common, moves from rural areas to urban areas is still the most appealing to most people
