Atomic Scientist Timeline
By Mya Ebert
Hypothesized that atoms were small hard particles that were uncuttable(hence the name atom, which came from atomos, which means uncuttable in Greek). He also said that atoms are made of a single material made into different shapes and sizes
Dalton
1803
He wanted to know why elements combine in specific proportions, and conducted experiments combining them. He concluded that all substances are made of atoms, atoms of different atoms are different, and atoms of the same elements are exactly the same.
J.J. Thomson
1897
He did the cathode-ray experiment, and found that there were small, negatively charged particles in atoms, what we now call electrons. This theory led to his "plum pudding" model of the atom.
Rutherford
1909-1911
He did the gold foil experiment, which was when he shot atoms at a thin sheet of gold foil, and found that while some passed through, many bounced off of it.
This caused his theory of a small, dense, positively charged nucleus in the center of the atom with most of the atom's mass. and the electrons surrounding the nucleus at a distance. He said that atoms contain mostly empty space.
Bohr
1913
Theorized that electrons travel in set paths or energy levels, and that they can jump from a path in one level to a path in another level. His model is still used today as a simple way to find the valence electrons.
Shrodinger & Heisenberg
20th Century
They said that electron paths can not be predicted, and that they are found in the electron cloud, an area surrounding the nucleus where electrons are likely to be found.
