Principles of Emotions and Emotional Messages
Emotional Arousal
Three stages occurs to an emotional arousl (1 an event occurs. 2) you experience and emotion. 3) you respond physiologically
James- Lange Theory says 1) an event occurs. 2) you respond physiologically 3) you experience an emotion
Cognitive labeling theory- 1) an event occurs. 2) you respond physiologically. 3) you decide on what emotion your feeling. 4) you experience the emotion
Body and Mind
When you experience emotion, you experience it both physically and mentally
Bodyily retains are the most obivious aspect of you emotional experience because we can observe them easily (ex the blush of embarrassment
The mental or cognitive part of emotional experience involves the evaluations and interpretations you make on the basis of what you experience (ex When you see a friend but he/she ignores, so you can think of how to feel in different ways
Emotions Primary or Blended
Primary emotions- Are the unthinking and instinctive responses that we have such as joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, and anticipation
Emotions that are close to each other are also close to each other in meaning
Blended emotions- these are emotions that are combinations of the primary emotions
Factors
Culture- the culture you were raised in and or the culture you live in gives you a frame work for both expressing feelings and interpreting the emotions of others
Gender- Men and women experience emotions similarly but they express emotion in different ways
Personality- Your personality will influence the emotions you'll feel, the extent to which you'll fell them and the ways in which you'll express or conceal these emotions.
Relationships- wether with lovers, friends or family can help reduce stress
Adaptive and Maladaptive
Adaptive- emotions, even those you normally think of as negative are often adaptive and help you adjust to situations
Maladaptive- Emotions may be maladaptive and may gen in the way of accomplishing your goals
Channels
Emotions are encoded both verbally and nonverbally
You decode the emotional messages of thatchers on the basis of their verbal and nonverbal cues
When expressing emotions face to face with words we also use facial expressions to go with what we are expressing like smiling, eye contact, body gestures, space between you and the other.
In text one shows emotions by substituting words that describe the the nonverbal that you would normally express and another way is by using emojis
