Principles of Emotion
Display Rules
Display rules are rules which govern the emotions that are permissible and ones that are not permissible to communicate.
-
Women display more nonverbal emotions compared to men as well. They are seen smiling more in public places.
Emotion work refers to the conscious process as to which you go through to bring your emotions and your emotional expression into a form that is accepted.
Emotion labor refers to the same process as emotion work, but is in a public setting and you will get paid for it.
I would be using emotion labor if I was seen smiling at the worst patient in the hospital.
Men cried way less than women within the workplace.
-
Body and Mind
Bodily reactions can be seen as blushing when you are feeling embarrassed. Mind reactions can be when you are estimating the likelihood of getting a no as a response.
Body emotions are something that are common because they can be observed easily.
I would be noticing that my parents are happy just based on them smiling back at me.

-
Adaptive and Maladaptive
Emotions are mostly adaptive even if they are negative.
-
Maladaptive emotions are those as to which get in your way of accomplishing your goals.
I would be experiencing a maladaptive emotion if I got up in front of a crowd and got nervous or anxious.
It can also be seen when someone takes a little thing and completely blows it out of proportion. The term crying over spilled milk came from this.
Emotional Arousal
It is a multi step process which has three steps. It happens when an event occurs, you experience an emotion, then you respond physiologically.
James-Lange theory switched up the second and third step which is when you respond physiologically and then you feel the emotion.
The cognitive labeling theory states that an event occurs, you respond physiologically, you interpret the arousal, and then you experience the emotion.
I think that these concepts are very similar, but play different roles in determining the emotions.
Emotion
-
There are a lot of different emotions that exist.
I would be showing emotion if I was crying at the funeral.
It is both a nonverbal and verbal way to communicate how you are feelings about a specific situation.
Primary or Blended
-
The eight basic emotions are joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, and anticipation.
Happiness would be a primary emotion whether I just got a raise or if I won some money.
Blended emotions are combinations of primary emotions.
Multiple Channels
Emotions can be expressed not only through verbal messages, but as well as accompanying nonverbal messages.
I would be expressing sorrow if I was not only crying, but also talking about the sad event as well.
In text-based messages you could always use words that may describe the nonverbal messages or use emoticons.
Anything from eye movement to facial expressions may simply give away the emotion that we are feelings.
-
Contagious
Emotions pass easily from one person to another also known as emotional contagion.
If I was crying because of something, my brother might start crying as well because he sees that I am hurt.
The process can be seen as you perceiving the emotional expression of others, you mimic the expression, then the feedback you get recalls the feelings you had when you last expressed yourself.
It can be seen between a mother and son, if the mother smiles the baby son may smile as well.
Can have Consequences
If someone is too open about their emotions it can either create a relationship with someone or actually scare them off.
I would be opening myself up to consequences if I told my co-worker that I was always upset.
It could show that you are confident in the person that you are talking to and that you trust them.
