Rare. Contamination of horse feed, pasture and vegetation with infectious fluids from bats e.g. bat urine, reproductive fluids
Horse-to-person
7 cases have occurred in Aus, 4 of which fatal. Exposure to respiratory secretion or other bodily fluids of horses.
Horse-to-horse
Occurs in close, prolonged contact. e.g stables.

Case investigation
Ensure appropriate samples taken, facilitate urgent lab testing, identify any exposures with equine cases, identify human contacts, liase with animal health authority

Clinical (humans): ILI, pneumonia, aseptic meningitis, encephalitis
Routine prevention:vet staff and others handling suspected equine cases to use PPE, reduce exposure of horses to flying foxes, equine vaccine is available.
Environmental evaluation: assessent of horses, quarantining property, potentially euthanising the horse, isolating and testing other horses.
PH significant: high CFR, aspects of disease poorly understood, media interst, need to involve animal health authorities
