Simile
Definition: A comparison that uses the words "like" or "as"
Ex:Her smile was as bright as the sun.
Metaphor
Comparison of two unrelated things that share a common characteristic
Ex: His voice was a bellowing tuba!
Personification
Definition: Giving human-like qualities to non-human things (includes ideas and animals)
Ex: The leaves danced about the ground as the autumn wind blew.
Onomatopoeia
Ex: The bee buzzed near Johnny's head.
Definition: A word that mimics natural sound and describes an items effect.
Alliteration
Definition: Repetition of beginning sounds in a group of words.
Ex 1: Dunkin' Donuts
Ex 2: The football fans flew from their seats in protest to the call.
Hyperbole
Definition: extreme exaggeration
Ex: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!
Idiom
Definition: An expression with meaning that is not easily determined by the usage of its words.
Ex: I think grandpa woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
Allusion
Definition: Reference to a person, place, thing, idea, or other literary work. A person would have to know something about the reference to understand the meaning.
Ex: Tom thinks of himself as a real Romeo.
