MEMORY, STORAGE DEVICES AND MEDIA
:
storage media
storage devices are devices which store small or large amounts of data
example: IBM created a storage device
to have a gigabyte of data and was created in 1980
TYPES OF STORAGE
primary storage
secondary storage
off-line storage
primary storage is also known as memory. once data has been input into a computer, it needs to be stored in a place that can be accessed quickly and directly by the computer's processor. it is the internal storage of a computer. compared to other types the capacity of primary storage is quite small.there are two types of primary storage ram and rom
RAM(random access memory)
it is primary storage that holds data to be processed and programs that are n use.data is held temporarily and erased when they are no longer in need, it also looses it's contents when the computer's power is switched off. as a result it is called volatile. it is built in various types of computers like embedded computers or general purpose computers
embedded computers such as pocket calculator, digital watch or central heating control system may only have a few kilobytes of ram, this is because they only need to process small amounts of data at any one time
general purpose computers such as laptops will have a few gigabytes of ram because it will hold the operating system and the programs that are currently running
