gallipoli
what happened
on march 18 1915 a fleet of British battleships sailed into the dardanelles and attacked the turkish forts that lined the straights
-
-
because of this when the british and the anzacs landed on the beach at cape hells and anzac cove, the turks were ready for them
when the allied troops landed on the beach they found their officers were not clear about the actions to take, at the suvla bay
-
-
at the anzac coves they found out that the beach was surrounded by high cliffs, which made it increasingly difficult to get up there, and the turks were in such higher positions
-
results
of 7 anzac battalions in 1915, 78% had dysentery
the dead were left rotting in the sun, on the 20th of may both sides decided a ceasefire to bury the bodies (huge smell)
conditions were terrible, food and water were contaminated and caused dysentery widespread (infection of intestine)
due to heavy winter, 15,000 died due to exposure
there were 213,000 allied deaths

-
-
plan
-
turkey was considered the weak ally, the sick man of europe
gain control of the dardanelles and Bosphorus (the straights) to get a link between the mediterranean sea and the black sea
