DSM 5 includes 3 criteria
Deficits in intellectual functioning
Deficits in adaptive functioning
Onset during development
Severity of ID is assessed in 3 domains: conceptual, social and practical
Based on IQ test
CAUSES
Genetic or Chromosomal Abnormalities
Down syndrome
Genetic mutation (not hereditary)
Additional chromosome on 21
Characterised by weakness in verbal abilities and facial features
1 in 850 births in U.S.
Fragile X syndrome
Silencing of single gene on X chromosome
Genetically passed on/inherited
Most common cause of genetically inherited intellectual disability
Females can be carriers (on x chrom) but males either have it or not
1 in 2500 births
Williams syndrome
Genetic mutation
Distinct facial phenotype, cognitive profile and intriguing social phenotype (sociable/friendly to strangers)
TREATMENT
Residential treatment
Cognitive treatments - may target ability rather than the traditional IQ test
