Carmichael coal mine
negative impact on
great barrier reef

"Somewhere between a quarter and a third of all marine species have some part of their lifecycle in a coral reef.
"So if we wipe out coral reefs, we are going to crash the ecologies of the oceans. It is that serious."

carbon emissions
There is essentially no carbon budget remaining for new sources of fossil fuels. At a time when we need to urgently reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, this mine takes us on the completely wrong trajectory. The rate of coal burning must be rapidly reduced to zero and given existing, excessive coal mine capacity, constructing the Carmichael mine is totally incompatible with strong action on climate change. port expansion
Building Terminal 0 would increase Adani’s port’s coal export capacity to 120Mtpa, all of which would be shipped through the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage Area. Link Title with all the associated risks of groundings and oil spills in the Reef Link Title
dredging of previously undisturbed seabed within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area resulting in water contamination and the destruction of vast areas of seagrass meadows - essential habitat for dugong.

did not correctly follow requirements under federal environment law to consider conservation advice regarding two endangered species affected by the proposal, the yakka skink and the Ornamental Snake. The Department is currently reassessing the proposal
Substantial controversy about federal environmental law followed the 2015 Federal Court decision to set aside the Carmichael approval (agreed by consent orders signed by the government).
subsidies door overheid
The Queensland and Australian Governments have proposed various forms of assistance to the project. This is despite the G20 commitment to phase out "inefficient" fossil fuel subsidies
Queensland: Queensland Treasurer confirmed the government will not fund the rail line but did not rule out other forms of support such as a royalty holiday
Australian government: voorlopig nog oké, maar The website states "The Commonwealth will not lend to projects that are commercially viable without Government assistance
