Jarrett is the author and illustrator of a number of children's books. This talk is specifically about his Lunch Lady series.
When he visited his old school, he saw his old lunch lady and she inspired his Lunch Lady comic book series.
-
When he was talking with her, he realized she had "grandkids, and therefore kids, and therefore left school at the end of the day." He thought she lived in the cafeteria!
He decided to make the Lunch Lady comic book series to validate what she and other lunch ladies do every day - serve food to school kids.

School Lunch Hero Day
After writing the Lunch Lady comics, Krosoczka decided to start School Lunch Hero Day to honor all lunch ladies, not just his own.
Schools from around the country decided to participate, and students made all kinds of thank you gifts to let the lunch ladies know that they were appreciated.

School Lunch Programs
In order to show how much lunch ladies do for the schools they work for, Krosoczka highlights a few schools and the programs they have developed.
A few lunch ladies "retrofitted a school bus" and turned it into a "mobile feeing unit" to feed kids during the summer, because they realized that the school lunch was often the only meal these kids got.
One lunch lady worked would keep an eye on students as they went through the lunch line and then would report back to guidance if she thoughts anything was wrong with a student.
