STRESS + STRESSORS CH 3, PART A
APPROACH IN THREE WAYS
-
stress is a stimulus, phys/psyc challenging events/circumstances are called stressors
stress is a state of tension, the psyc/phys response to stress is called strain
-
COGNITIVE APPRAISAL:
- Whether a demand threatens phys/psyc wellbeing
- whether they have the resources to meet that demand
-
SECONDARY (can i cope?)
x's assessment of resources we have available for coping -- continuously happening but we are ESPECIALLY aware during secondary appraisal
ex. 'i can do it with help', 'i can do it if i work hard', 'no problem i can do it'
-
-
stress -- transactions lead x to perceive a discrepancy b/w phys/psyc demands of situation and resources of bio, psycho, social systems #
demands, resources and discrepancies can all be REAL or can simply be PERCEIVED #
stress: condition/amt depends on outcome of appraisals we make. perceive resources as sufficient to meet demands = little/no stress, perceive demands as greater than resources = lots of stress. these patterns determine everyday stress responses. # #
