Complexities of Resistance
Resistance was complex because Europe divided African tribes and nations while also building upon already there tensions. Africans were not sure who to fight as sometimes Europeans were on their side and sometimes Europeans teamed up with their enemies.
Europeans and Africans
Many European countries took part in colonizing Africa including France, England, Germany, Berlin, Portugal, Netherlands, and Italy.
During the Scramble for Africa
Late 1800s - Early 1900s
Europe was able the easily colonize Africa because there was very little nationalism.
Africans were split into local tribes, making it difficult to organize a rebellion.
Europeans had the "guns germs and steel" advantage
Africans had to fight local tribes and the Europeans
African resistance was when African nations, tribes, or just natives rose up against the Europeans, who were colonizing all of Africa (except Ethiopia & Liberia) and oppressing them for their own benefit.
