Task 7: Anxiety
-
Brain areas involved
Amygdala: coordination of automatic threat response via integrating sensory features, context, and prior learning. Processing fearful materials. In anxiety patients - characteristic pattern of increased amygdalar reactivity to threat cues. / the thalamus is like a gate for sensory input which relays the info to the amygdala which then initiates behavioural and autonomic nervous system responses via the projection of the motor response => fear response.
Reciprocal connections between amygdala and PFC: amygdalar activity is modulated by top-down governance of medial prefrontal regions and the hippocampus which allows relevant information to influence threat responding => also mechanism of fear extinction (the better the connection between amygdala and PFC, the better fear extinction)
Insula: it integrates the information from the other brain regions responsible for anxiety (e.g. amygdala and PFC) and generates an interceptive prediction signal => difference between current body state and predicted future state.
