Forms of dementia
Vascular dementia: Poor blood supply to the brain as a result of a stoke or low accumulation of blood vessels in the brain and therefore cannot get enough 02
Alzheimer's disease: Most common form. Shrinking of brain and build up of abnormal proteins. It is progressive.
Parkinson's disease: nerve clumps are likely to begin in an area deep in the brain called the substantia nigra. These clumps are thought to cause degeneration of the nerve cells that produce dopamine.
Huntington's Disease: The gene defect causes abnormalities in a brain protein that, over time, lead to worsening symptoms.
Risk and prevention:
By doing physical activity, you are increasing blood and oxygen to the brain for it to normally function

Cardiovascular - damage to the blood vessels can cause dementia to get worse therefore...dont smoke, maintain a healthy weight, keep BP, cholesterol and blood sugars within normal ranges

Nursing intervenions
promoting the patient’s safety, reducing anxiety and agitation, improving communication, providing for socialization and intimacy, adequate nutrition
Receive adequate fluids and nutrition;
Take exercise;
Go to the toilet normally (this will also help to ensure medication is metabolised effectively).
