DETECT & CHARACTERIZE

Define case, active case finding, orientate data TPPP, determine who is at risk, generate hypothesis & conduct analytical study, supplement with biological/environmental samples
Clinical: acute gastroenteritis. Stools typically contain blood, pus, mucus.
Complications: toxic megacolon, HUS
Stand-down
Document, surveillance, declare over, debrief
Enteric bacterium, 4 species, multiple serotypes
Transmission: faecal oral, consumption contaminated food/water, sexual contact (oral/anal sex), fomites
PH importance: Abx resistance, highly infectious, outbreaks MSM, c/care centres, institutions

Priority cases: childcare attendees, childcare workers, HCWs, food handlers
Infectious period: can be shed in faeces for months if not Rx with appropriate Abx. If Rx w Abx, few days.
