A survey was conducted to determine the favorite activity of guests at the Sun and Beach Resort. The resort staff wanted to know if people preferred kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing, surfing, jetskiing, or parasailing, so that they could buy upgraded materials for the favorite activity. The resort had 1,800 guests. They decided to chose participants through a clustered sample. They created clusters based on the last digit of the room number, and created 10 clusters, with rooms ending in 0-9. Then they performed a simple random sample and used a random number table to chose 3 groups. They had the the cleaning staff leave a copy of the survey in each room that was chosen, with one copy for each person in the room. They were asked to simply circle their favorite choice and leave it in the room for the staff to collect, which minimizes effort on the part of the participant and hopefully increases participation.
