THE STATE
:!: NATION :!: - a cultural and historical concept describing a group of people who identify with one another on the basis of a shared history, culture, language and myths.
NATIONALISM - the belief that a group of people with a common national identity marked by culture and history has the right to form an independent state to govern itself free of external intervention

state: - legal and political authority of a territory containing a population and marked by borders. the state defines the political authority of which government is the managing authority; that authority is regarded as both sovereign and legitimate by the citizens of the state and the governments of other states

population - necessary to make it a state not real estate
territory - states operate within fixed borders, and control of the movement of people, money and goods
legitimacy - states are recognised by their residents and other states as having jurisdiction and authority within their territory
sovereignty - have sovereignty over the territory, they are the sole, supreme authority

:!: SOVEREIGNTY - the ultimate source of authority in a society. The sovereignty is the highest and final decision-maker within a community
CITIZEN - a full member of a state, entitled to the rights and subject to the duties associated with that status and state. Citizenship is confirmed with in a document
WESTPHALIAN SYSTEM - the modern state system that many believe emerged out of the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, based on the sovereignty of states and political self-determination
QUASI STATES - states that exist and are recognised under international law but whose governments control little of the territory under their jurisdiction e.g SOMALIA
DE FACTO STATES - states that are not recognised under international law but control territory and provide governance e.g. NORTHERN REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS
SELF DETERMINATION - ability to act without external compulsion. you can choose your own political destiny. the right for people to possess their own government
GLOBALISATION - the process by which the links between people, corporations and governments in different states become integrated through through factors such as trade, investment, comms and tech
