CHARACTERS
MILDRED
In this story Mildred is one perfect example of the person that's always using technology and not caring about anything else. The fact that she took 30+ pills just because she forgot she had taken one shows the reader how technology can make you completely ignorant.
BEATTY
In this story Beatty represents paradox since he knows everything about books and the positive side of books but he still decides to burn them all.
CLARISSE
Clarisse shows a different lifestyle to the rest of society. She is someone that is always around nature while other people are with technology. She also helps Montag change his personality throughout the story.
MONTAG
He is the main character in this story, he shows a change because at first he burned books and throughout the story he starts reading books and gaining more knowledge.
SYMBOLS
PHOENIX
Phoenix is considered as "life after death" and Montag uses it as a representation of how the city was burned by the bombers but after it was "burned down" they come alive again and learn lessons from the past to become better.
MIRROR
Montag shows an example of mirror with Clarisse as he reflects on his personality this ends up by him rebelling to society and he starts reading books instead of burning them.
BOOKS
Books represent freedom, and as Montag starts reading he starts realizing is better to read the books than burning them, and that books make you a smarter person.
FIRE
Fire is important due to it symbolizing the firemen's destruction, in the firemen's helmet there was a drawing of fire and the number "451".
THEMES
IGNORANCE VS KNOWLEDGE
This theme is represented because firemen wanted to destroy the books so the population is equal in terms of ignorance, but after Montag realizes the importance of books and the importance of life as Clarisse shows him, he decides to go against everything the society believed.
TECHNOLOGY
In this story technology takes over humanity and most of the time people are watching TV or using computers this led to technology replacing literature, intellectualism and even curiosity. In the case of Mildred she replaces Montag with computers.
CENSORSHIP
Censorship can be represented by the community not interested in reading books and also that some books are banned so that people who don't read won't feel inferior to people that do read.
NON-CONFORMITY
Non-Conformity is represented by Clarisse because since she is different to all the other people in the society she is not happy that everyone is using technology instead of appreciating nature or different aspects of the world.
GENRE
DYSTOPIAN
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian literature because they want to be a perfect society by everyone having the same knowledge and level of intellectualism.
