Why

When Spain gave the land to France the stronger country Jefferson was concerned about European powers selling what he believed to be American land. He was also nervous about the stronger country of France being right next to the US, which as a new country could be easily taken over. Lastly, he wanted to access to the Mississippi River to ship goods and water crops and New Orleans where the River meets the Gulf of Mexico.
