WHEN: From 1804 to 1806

Why?

US: When Spain gave the land to France (the stronger country) Jefferson was concerned about European powers selling what he believed to be American land. He was also nervous about the stronger country of France being right next to the US, which as a new country could be easily taken over. Lastly, he wanted to access to the Mississippi River (to ship goods and water crops)

France: Napoleon was fighting to expand his power in Europe and his territory of Haiti had just rebelled. Napoleon decided to give up his dream of an American empire to focus his efforts in Europe.
