Lecture 21
Carbon Monoxide
Poisoning
-
-
-
can target haemoglobin
disrupts normal oxygen transport by occupying the O₂ binding site with a much higher affinity than oxygen.
-
Who is at risk?
mainly foetuses ─ foetal has a greater affinity for CO than adult haemoglobin; COHb can be 10-15% higher than in mother upon contact.
a mother can show few symptoms following CO contact, but may show detrimental effects in the foetus.
