Nonverbal messages interact with verbal messages
Nonverbal Messages Help Manage Impressions
Six Major Ways
Accent-Emphasizes some part of the verbal messages.Example;*When I am working at the hospital I make very good eye contact with my patients to let them know I am serious about their care.
Complement-Add nuances of meaning not communicated by your verbal message. Example;*When I tell my patients a positive story I tell it with a smile on my face so they have something positive to reflect on while being in the hospital.
Contradict-Contadict your verbal message. Example;* When I tell a sarcastic joke to my co-worker I usually wink to let them no I am joking or lying.
Control-Nonverbal movements to control. Example;*When I am in class I raise my hand to speak and to let people know I want to talk.
Repeat-Restate the message. Example;*When I was on orientation I always asked my preceptor if I was doing the task correctly by verbally asking them and raising my eyebrows.
Substitute-Nonverbal to substitute for verbal. Example;*When someone is sleeping at my house we usually whisper to each other or use nonverbal signals like shaking are heads yes and no.
