Body Gestures
Kinesics- the study of communication through body movement
Emblems- body gestures that directly translate into words or phrases
Illustrators- Accompany and literally "illustrate" verbal messages
Affect Display- communicate emotional meaning
Regulators- monitor, maintain, or control the speech of another
Adaptors- satisfy one needs
Body Appearance
Your general body appearance also communicates.
Tall vs short- taller people tend to get better praise and support from others compared to short people
Your body also reveals your race and may even give clues as to your specific nationality
Attractiveness- Attractive people have an advantage about literally everything one can name of
Facial Expression
Facial movements alone seem to communicate messages about pleasantness, agreement, and sympathy
Facial Management- techniques that enable you to communicate your feelings in order to achieve the effect you want
To intensify- to exaggerate surprise when friends throw a party to make them feel better
To deintensify- to cover up your own joy in the presences of friend who is sad
To neutralize- to cover up your sadness o keep from depressing others
To mask- to express happiness to cover up your disappointment
Facial Feedback- holds that your facial expressions influences physiological arousal
Culture and Facial expression- the wide variations in facial communication that you observe in different cultures seem to reflect which reactions are publicly permissible
Eye Message
Oculesics- research on communication via the eyes
During eye contact one sends a variety of messages like by requesting feedback you make direct eye contact signaling them to respond
You may also inform others to speak by making eye contact and channeling the message to let them know to speak
When you avoid eye contact or avert your glance you help others maintain their privacy, such as, glancing away at a couple arguing
Eye avoidance can signal others to think that your not interested
Artifactual messages
Are messages conveyed through objects or arrangements made by human hands.
This includes the colors you prefer, the clothing or jewelry you wear, the way your decorate your space and even the bodily scents communicate a wide variety of meanings
Touch Messages
Touch communication or tactile communication, is perhaps the most primitive form of communication.
Haptics the study of touch
Touch often communicates emotion, mainly between intimates or others who have a close relationship
Playfullness- touch often communicates the desire to play, sometimes affectively or aggressively
Control- touch may control or direct the behaviors, attitudes, or feelings of the other person
Ritual- touching is also a ritual thing like shaking a hand when greeting someone
Task-related- touching often occurs while you're performing some function
Paralanguage Messages
It refers to how you say something, not what you say
In addition to stress and pitch , paralanguage includes such voice qualities or vocal characteristics as rate, volume, and rhythm
Silence Messages
People use the silence as a weapon to hurt others like the silent treatment
Silence may also be used as a response to personal anxiety, shyness, or threats
Sometimes silence communicates a determination to be uncooperative or defiant
Silence can be used strategically to better emphasis on what you're speaking of
Time Messages
The study of temporal communication, known technically as chronemics, concerns the use of time
Interpersonal time refers to a wide variety of time-related elements that figure into interpersonal interaction
-Punctuality
-Wait time
-Talk time
-Relationship time
-Response time
Formal time- includes seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years
Informal times-are more general, more ambitious and involve such informal time terms as, forever, immediately , soon , etc.
Monochronic time- schedule one thing at a time
Polychronic- schedule more than one thing at a time
Social Clock- refers to a time schedule for when your suppose to do things in your life
