Product Placement Implications
Producers of shows earn profit from companies
Money becomes more valued in modern society, specifically in the television industry
Producers care less about the morality of their shows, this impacts the content and news values used in the shows as people will have less concern for the impacts that their reality shows have on the cast and audience
More people enter the reality TV industry and produce more shows for the high profits
Shows are able to be bigger/more global as the makers have enough money to enlarge their companies
The brand gets more exposure/more known
Profits for the brand are boosted and it becomes more popular in the masses
Social pressure increases for people to be 'cool' by purchasing products from famous brands.
Other, lesser known competing brands may suffer
This can be harmful to peoples mentalities (as they could be bullied for not following the trends and being 'normal')
Bigger brands can help audience relate better (emotionally connect) to the show and the cast
For example, an audience member might relate more to a character if they wear their favorite brand
Brands become more popular
Increased social pressure to follow trends/brands
Too much product placement can turn a show into a set of adverts
Quality of the show decreases as the priority of the show is more about squeezing brands onto the screen rather than producing enjoyable and educational entertainment
People become used to seeing millions of brandings and advertisements every day
people tune out when branding is shown to them therefore making brand advertising less effective
Advertising spaces become more expensive and rarer until the point businesses and shows can't survive without advertising
Shows become recognised for being associated with certain brands
This affects public perception of reality television in general as it can be deemed 'trashy' or 'unhealthy' because it is commonly associated with uneducational and unhealthy brands such as fast food chains.
If something happens to the brand, like it goes bankrupt or the owner commits a severe crime, the show will likely suffer as well
