Eukaryotic Cell Organelles
Chloroplasts (plant cells only)
The chloroplasts in plant cells only are like solar panels on the roof of a house. The chloroplasts gather light energy and turn it into energy through the process of photosynthesis which is what solar panels do as well.
Microfilaments
The microfilaments are like the metal mesh of a screen. The metal mesh of a screen allows for movement of air in and out and supports the rest of the window by holding it up which is similar to how microfilaments assemble and disassemble to allow for movement and are thread-like.
Cell Wall (plant cells only)
The cell wall in plant cells only are like the walls of the house. The cell wall is a rigid layer that protects the plant cell, which is what the walls of a house do for the people inside.
Cytoplasm
The cytoplasm is like the gravity inside of a house. The Cytoplasm is the fluid that fills the inside of a cell and holds all of the organelles in place and like that, gravity fills the inside of every household and holds all of the people to the ground.
Cell Membrane
The cell membrane is like a pantyhose. The pantyhose protects the legs of the wearer, is flexible, and opens at the top to let the legs enter (to put the pantyhose on) which is similar to how the cell membrane protects the cell, conforms to different shapes, and opens to let vesicles in and out.
Nucleus
The nucleus is like a computer chip. A computer chip holds the vital information about the computer (memory) and is the processing center for the computer which is what the nucleus does for the cell (contains DNA about the cell and processes the activity of the cell).
Rough ER
The rough ER is like a bendy straw. A bendy straw his ridges on it so that it can bend to your liking and the straw will act as a tunnel for liquids to go through on their way to your mouth which is what the rough ER does because it has bumps/ridges on it since there are ribosomes attached and it is a tunnel for proteins to move through.
Golgi Apparatus
The golgi apparatus is like a printer. A printer receives information from your computer and processes that to print/assembly your papers in the right order which is similar to how the golgi apparatus receives information on how to process and pack (assemble) the proteins/lipids of the cell.
Smooth ER
The smooth ER is like a filter straw. A filter straw is a straw for liquids to move through and those liquids will be filtered on their way to your mouth which is what the smooth ER does when moving enzymes through its tunnels to detoxify the cell.
Vacuole
A vacuole is like a tupperware container. A tupperware container holds an array of items ranging from food to even liquids which is what the vacuole does for the cell in the sense that it holds the cell's water and even its wastes,
Lysosomes
A lysosome is like dish soap. Dish soap is made to destroy and clean tough stains and crusted dirt on plates and lysosomes contain enzymes that are made to destroy and get rid of unwanted waste such as bacteria, etc.
Mitochondria
The mitochondria is like a rechargeable battery (lithium). A rechargeable/lithium battery provides the energy for many things and can be recharged to be used again which is how the mitochondria acts for the cell in the sense that it provides the energy for the cell and can be "recharged" and gain more energy through the process of cellular respiration.
Microtubules
The microtubules are like penne pasta. Penne pasta is shaped like a hollow tube and allows for movement of the pasta sauce through the penne and that is roughly similar to microtubules because they are hollow structures that form cilia and flagella and those provide movement to cells.
Ribosomes
The ribosome is like a protein shake packet. A protein shake packet contains proteins that will be released outside of the rest of the packet and into the person's body when mixed with water which is what ribosomes do when making proteins and transporting them outside of the cell.
