2.5.4 Input and Output Device (Input Devices)
Any hardware component that allows user to
enter data and instructions into a computer
Keyboard
Gaming keyboard
Designed specifically for playing games on the
computer
contains keys that users can
press to enter data and instructions into a
computer
Wireless keyboard
Transmits data to the system unit using wireless
technology, such as bluetooth, or infrared
Ergonomic keyboard
designed for comfort and to reduce the chance of
wrist and hands injuries.
Pointing Devices
allows user to control a
pointer on the screen.
Trackball
A stationary pointing device with a ball on its top
or side
Mouse
fits in a palm, and used to
control the pointer by moving it along a flat
surface
Touchpad
a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is
sensitive to pressure and motion
Touch-screen
A touch-sensitive display device
Users can interact with touch screens by
touching area of the screens
making on-screen selection, or entering
text
Pen input
A device used to write, draw and tap on the
flat surface such as screen of mobile phone,
tablet or signature capture pad.
Stylus
A small metal or plastic device that looks like a
tiny ink pen but uses pressure instead of ink.
Digital pen
Slightly larger than a stylus, pressure sensitive,
and provide more functionality such as electronic
erasers and programmable buttons
Scanner and Reading Devices
Scanner
A light-sensing input device that reads printed
text and graphics and then translates the
results into the form the computer can
process
Flatbed
– Scanning mechanism passes under the item to be
scanned, which is placed on the glass surface
Pen or handheld
– Move pen over text, then transfer data into
computer
Sheet-Fed
– Item to be scanned is pulled into stationary
scanning mechanism
Drum
– Item to be scanned rotates around stationary
scanning mechanism
Reading Devices
Devices that can capture data directly from a
source document into the computer.
Optical reader
– A device that uses a light source to read
characters, marks, and codes and then converts
them into digital data that computer can process
OCR reader – reads printed or handwritten
characters.
OMR reader – reads hand-drawn marks such as a
small circle or rectangle
Bar code reader
– Uses laser beams to read bar codes by using light
patterns that pass through the bar code lines
RFID reader
– Uses radio signal to read information on RFID tag
which is placed in or attached to an object, an
animal, or a person.
– Some examples of RFID readers are to track toll
payments, or track airline baggage.
Magnetic stripe card reader
– Reads the magnetic stripe on the back of credit
card, student card, bank card or other similar
cards.
MICR reader
– Reads text printed with magnetized ink (such as
characters pre-printed on a cheque), and converts
into the form the computer can process
Voice Input
the process of entering any
sound into the computer such as speech,
music and sound effects
Microphone is a device that converts sound
into an electrical signal.
Video Input
the process of capturing fullmotion
images and storing them on a
computer’s storage medium
Digital video camera
– A device that records video as digital signals,
which can be transferred into a computer by
connecting the video device to the computer
Web cam
– A type of digital camera attached to or built in a
computer that enables user to capture video and
still images and share them through the Internet
Biometric Input
translates a personal
characteristic (the input) into a digital code
that is compared with a digital code stored in
the computer
technology of authenticating
a person’s identity by verifying a personal
characteristic
Fingerprint reader
– Captures curves and indentations of a fingerprint
Face recognition system
– Captures a live face image and compares it with a
stored image
Hand geometry system
– Measures the shape and size of a person’s hand
Voice verification system
– Compares a person’s live speech with stored voice
pattern
Signature verification system
– Recognizes the shape of handwritten signature, as
well as measures the pressure and the motion
used to write the signature
Iris recognition system
– Reads patterns in the iris of the eye
Retinal scanner
– Scans patterns of blood vessel in the back of the
retina
