MILGRAM VARIATIONS
-
#7
ABSENT AUTHORITY - In this variation, the experimenter' gives the participants their instructions at the start, then leaves the teacher alone in the room with the shock generator and a telephone. If the teacher has questions or doubts, they must phone the experimenter. The “prods” are delivered over the telephone.

#10
INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT - The study is held in a rundown office in Bridgeport. There is nothing to make the participants link things to the University: the experimenter claims to work for a private research firm.
-
Milgram states this is not a large enough decrease to be significant and concludes that location is not as important as status of authority figure.
PPs showed more doubts and asked more questions, one made notes as if intending to write a letter of complaint
#13
ORDINARY AUTHORITY FIGURE - The experimenter left the room and a non-uniformed man who appeared to be another volunteer takes over writing down the times. There were no definite instructions but the confederate PP made suggestions to the PP
-
13A -For the 16 PPs who disobeyed, Milgram now makes them switch place with the confederate. They are now a bystander to the shocks
All 16 protested however 11 allowed the confederate to got to 450V, other 5 tried to unplug shock generator
Milgram concludes that people are more likely to be bystanders, but may not actually carry out the action themselves
