ethnolects
Dialects are defined by groups of speakers and groups are most easily defined by regions.
But in countries like Australia, you have social groups who all originated from the same region – immigrants.
In Australia, we have a lot of these immigrant groups and they have their own dialect that they speak. This is what we call an ethnolect – a dialect based on ethnicity.
The most famous example in Australia are “wogs”, a term that covers immigrants from the Middle East and Mediterranean. Some features include: e.g. Loss of plural inflections on nouns, Loss of tense inflections on verbs
