Perception Concept Map by: Nadja Rajan 10A
Gestalt Principles: the experience of organizing stimuli with the variety of responses there can be.
Closure: when we see similar shapes make a pattern we fill the gap
Continuity: we see continued patterns not disrupted ones
Similarity: when different objects mingle we separate them into groups of the similar figures
Simplicity: we see the simplest shapes possible
Proximity: when you see similar objects we group them in sets
Perceptual Inference: perceptions that are not based completely on common sense rather than sensory information. For example, when you hear a bark you know it comes from a dog and not a cat. It is automatic and unconscious.
Learning to Perceive: people learn how to perceive since early stages, like infants on what is right and wrong. Perceiving becomes a base of what they will believe in among other essential aspects.
Subliminal Perception is the responding of stimuli through the unconscious mind
Depth Perceptions: ability to recognize distances en 3Dimensionality.
Monocular Depth Cues: using a single eye to determine relative height, interposition, lights and shadows, texture, density, motion parallax, linear perspective and relative motion.
Binocular Depth Cues: using both eyes through convergence which is when they eyes turn inward to look at nearby objects. The difference between our eyes is retinal disparity.
Figure-Ground Perception: Distinguishing an object from its background and the ground. This can be with any of the senses like hearing a melody and blocking every other sound in the background.
Constancy: the tendency to perceive objects the same way always even if the angle, distance, or lighting is changed.
Illusions: incorrect perceptions that trick our mind into believing that an image looks differently than what it actually is.
Extrasensory Perception: receiving information from other sources unlike the ordinary senses. It is a controversial topic.
Telepathy: reading someone else's mind.
Psychokinesis: moving objects through pure mental effort.
Clairvoyant: perceiving information without sensory input.
Precognition: ability to infer what is going to happen.
