Topic 1b - Group 1 (Alkali Metals)
Properties of alkali metals
All silvery solids that have to be stored in oil and handled with forceps
All have 1 electron in there outer shell - makes them very reactive
All low density
Trends down Group 1
Reactivity
Reactivity increases down the group, so elements at the bottom are more reactive than at the top
Melting and boiling points
Decrease down the group
Relative atomic mass
Increase down the group
Reaction with non-metals
Alkali metals react with non-metals to form ionic compounds
Reaction with water
alkali metal + water = metal hydroxide + hydrogen
React very vigorously
The hydroxides formed when alkali metals react with water will dissolve in water to give alkaline solutions
Reaction with chlorine
alkali metal + chlorine = metal chloride
Reaction with oxygen
Group 1 metals react with oxygen to form a metal oxide
