Tobacco Has a Place In Modern Society
Smoking is Cool
Because
Tobacco was once a cornerstone of American life.
Because
Cigarettes were widely used, not just by the public, but by news men, cartoon characters and TV commercials were prominent.
But
Some people didn’t smoke
Because
For the past half century, America has steadily limited how tobacco companies are able to behave.
But
Once people are educated about the side effects and negative impacts that smoking has, less people smoke cigarettes.
Because
Smoking is extremely detrimental to people's health, life expectancy and quality of life.
But
Some people think that it is still cool
Because
Third world countries are not informed about the health risks due to lack of education and legislation.
But
Some countries are pushing for legislation that better informs the consumer about the health risks associated with the product
However
The inhabitants of most countries, even smokers believe that people should be educated about the risks and then allowed to make their own decision.
Tobacco Companies Are Evil
Because
In less developed countries, tobacco companies are taking advantage of less educated people.
Because
Once people learn about the health detriments, less and less people will buy them, as is the way in more developed countries.
However
Tobacco companies are firmly against tougher packaging laws, and have sued entire countries over this matter.
But
These people, smokers and non-smokers alike want tougher legislation towards cigarettes and cigarette packaging, like we have here in Australia.
Because
Tobacco companies have sued entire countries over plain packaging laws. Two major tobacco companies sued Australia through an international court on the grounds that Australia had broken a 1993 Trade Agreement between Australia and Hong Kong that stated that Australia could not seize Hong Kong based companies property.
However
Tobacco companies lost the court case against the Australian Government in which they tried to make out that removing brands from cigarette packaging will lower the value of their trademark and intellectual property.
