Credible and Reliable
https://newsela.com/ :Overall a good website
Task 1: Who is the author? On their about us page, there are many names, pictures of people, backgrounds, ect. So, different people write different articles by using websites that other staff make.
Task 2: Is the information accurate?
Yes, the information is accurate for many reasons. To begin with, you can fact check it on many other current news articles. Also, it is updates all of the time. These are some of the many reasons why newsela is accurate.
Task 3: Is there bias?
No, there is no bias because they are not trying to convince you to do anything, they have both views in all of their articles, and their word choice does not try to make you feel sympathy for something, buy something, etc.
Task 4: When was the website made?
Newsela is updates almost every day with new content and articles. Therefore, the date at the bottom says 2017
Is the site too old to be trusted?
The site is not too old to be trusted because it was uploaded in 2017. Even though it is now later in 2017, the information is shows will not change because it is about the 2017 election.
What is the date on the website? The date on this website is 2017 and it is about statistics of the election in 2016. This means that it was definitely made at the right time for it to be about 2017. This is one aspect that makes this website credible.
When was the website last edited?
The website has not been edited since it was uploaded but this is because the statistics have not and will not change until the next election. This is because you can't go back and change what has already happened.
Do the links work?
Yes, the links that I tried all worked and there is no reason for me to believe that this trend would change. This means that this website is somewhat credible already without any other aspect because it was made at the right time.
Does the website try to sell me something?
The website does not try to sell me something, it is giving me purely the fact and nothing else. I looked at a specific article to check and found that it was not biased in this way.
Is it a .com? If so ,does it have prices and coupons in a catalog on it?
This website is a .org or organization and I could not find a catalog on it that has prices. I also could not find advertisements for itself on it, or anything else suggesting it is selling something on their website.
Is there a Mission Statement in the about us link that tells you what the website is trying to do? Yes, there is a mission statement on the About Us link but it is not about selling or getting people to donate. It is purely about helping k-12th graders all around the world know more about our world.
Is there one viewpoint someone is trying to make you believe?:
No, there really isn't a view point on one of their articles I read because it is just trying to give you the facts and nothing else. I could not find an opinion anywhere in the article I chose and hypothesize that this is a trend that continues throughout all of their articles.
Is the author listed on the website? If so, who is it?
The author is listed and it is Dogtime. This is helpful because you can look up the author to see if it is trustworthy, and report or review the author on a website to tell people she is not trustworthy.
Is there an about us page with contact information that works?
Yes, there is an about us page and the contact information does work. This makes it a better website to use because if the author made a mistake, you can contact them and make them fix it as well as they are not afraid to get emails like that.
Is there a tilde and is it a .org, .gov, or .com? This website is a .com meaning commercial. However, I did not find any adds or anything trying to sell me something for a price on the website. Also, no tilde could be found in the link.
Does the author cite her sources?
Yes, I could find the sources that the author used to find the information on this website. The links were on the side of the website and in many other places as well. This means that I can fact check her information on the websites she gave to find her information.
Is the same information found on different websites?
Yes, I could find a lot of the information on this website on different websites. This means the information is most likely accurate because many people found it to be true.
Is the person who wrote it trustworthy?
Yes, the person who wrote it is very trustworthy because she works for the Smithsonian which is a very respected museum chain in Washington D.C. Also, the contact information for the people who wrote it does work.
