A PROPER EMAIL
TO A LECTURER :
1. Making a good impression
b) Use your academic account
Avoid spam filter
The lecturer will know who is the sender
c) Include a strong subject line
Helpful for the lecturer
Give clue to what it is before opening it
a) Check the syllabus for the answer first
Probably already answered in class
Asking again makes you look like you are not a serious student
It is fine to question that is not answered yet in class
d) Start with a greeting using the lecturer's title
"Dear Dr. Azza Jauhar,"
Treat like a formal letter
2. Create content of email
d) Work on tone
No emojis
Will be more relax as the semester goes on
e) Make requests politely
Do not be too demanding

I had a difficult week with the death of my grandmother. Would you please give me an extension on this test? :check:
c) Write in complete sentences
Not facebook
Anything less looks unproffesional

You gave an enligheting class, Dr. :check:
f) Use proper punctuation
When texting to a friend, it is okay to skip a period or comma
Use punctuation where it should be
b) Stick to the point
Lecturers are busy people
Do not drag the email with useless information
g) Spell out words

You, tomorrow, classmate :check:
a) Remind the lecturer who you are
Lecturers have many students
State which class, if possible the class period
h) Capitalize words appropriately
Capital letter for beginning of sentence
Always capitalize words that needs to be capitalized
3. Finishing your email
c) Look the email over from your lecturer's perspective
Think about the content. Do not be too demanding
-Do not over share your personal life, as it is not proffesional
d) End the email with a salutation
"Sincerely,"
b) Read over your email for grammar
Check for grammar mistakes
There will be a mistake or two usually
a) Specify what action you want the lecturer to take
State clearly what do do you want
f) Acknowledge a reply
"Thank you for the replies"
