Digestion and absorption

mouth
physical breakdown

teeth: tear, rip and grind food

Duodenum
duodenum
fats: bile emulsifies fat to disperse them in liquid in small droplets. pancreatic lipase breaks fat into insoluble fatty acids and soluble glycerol. the fatty acids react with the bile to make them soluble.
-
protein: the chyme is mixed with bile from the gall bladder and the pancreatic juice. bile neutralizes the acid and stops the work of pepsin. trypsin continues the breakdown of peptides to peptodes
ileum
-
carbohydrates: maltase breaks down maltose to glucose. invertase breaks down sucrose to glucose and fructose. lactase breaks down lactose to glucose and galactose

Glycerol and fatty acids are absorbed into the lacteal where they recombine to make fats, which mix the lymphatic fluid.
-
water absorption
After the nutrients absorption the waste products and food residues pass into the large intestine, still in liquid state.
Water is absorbed here making the food residues (faeces) more solid.
This may take up to 12 hours
Finally the faeces collect in the rectum and are ready for excretion.
