JIng-mei took advantage of the fact that Mr. Chong was deaf to not practice and make a lot of mistakes because he couldn't hear the wrong notes she was playing.
"I discovered that Old Chong's eyes were too slow to keep up with the wrong notes I was playing." (pg. 137)
Jing-mei knew that Mr. Chong's eyes were slow and couldn't catch her mistakes so she didn't care about trying to learn the right ones.
