Functions of the blood
4 main components
PLASMA
PLATELETS
RED BLOOD CELLS
WHITE BLOOD CELLS
PLASMA
Liquid part of blood
Pale yellow liquid
Transports
Red and White blood cells
Platelets
Digested food products
Glucose, amino acids
Carbon dioxide
Urea
From liver to kidneys (removed into the urine)
Hormones
Heat energy
PLATELETS
Small fragments of cells
Help blood clot
In damaged cells- they clump together to 'plug' the damaged area
Blood clots stop you losing blood
Prevent MICROORGANISMS from entering the cell
Held together by protein (FIBRIN)
RED BLOOD CELLS
Carry Oxygen
Transport oxygen from lungs to the body
Small, biconcave shape
Large surface area
Absorb and release oxygen
Contain HAEMOGLOBIN
Lots of ions
Reacts with oxygen ---> OXYHAEMOGLOBIN
Don't have a nucleus
